A classic wardrobe staple—the white button-down.

Something about the white button-down just makes you feel instantly polished. It’s a great way to let your hair, makeup, or accessories do all the talking. Whenever I’m at a loss for what to put on, this makes me feel instantly chic with a great pair of denim, trousers, trendy skirt, etc. I blame it on my forever style crushes Olivia Palermo and Rachel Bilson; those two know how to work this classic look.

Now, not all white button-downs are created equal. It took me a while to find a style that didn’t make me feel like I was wearing my Mom’s work blouse. Do you know what I mean?? You have to hunt one down that feels like you. In fact, I think it’s quite necessary to have them in a few different go-to styles to be able to create different looks.

how to style the white button-down

Here are a couple of ways I love to style this staple piece:

The baggy chic.

This is great for that relaxed and casual look. It’s a classic look that’s appropriate for the office, date night, and drinks with the girls alike. It’s seriously so figure-flattering tucked in, don’t let the “baggy” part fool you. Complimentary pairings include a statement earring (hair pulled back, see my post on low buns here) a casual sneaker, fun boot or heel, silk skirt trend, etc. My favorite take on this is from Athleta—it’s the perfect balance of baggy and fitted. Unfortunately, they don’t make it anymore, but a close second is here from Madewell. I am particularly picky about the bottom length—some are way too long and some are too short. We want it right in the middle for that cool-girl look.

For a more off-duty look, I also love to wear this over a more form-fitting tank with denim and leave it open.

The proper and polished.

This is the classic one for fancier occasions like that interview or work event with chic A-line fit and flare midi skirt. I’m a fan of Banana Republic or JCREW for this occasion.

The tie it up.

This is so fun and fitting for a beach day or summer road trip. Tie it up over a pair of denim shorts, a bikini, or maxi skirt—here we’re going for all the “out of office” vibes. Leaving it open over a bikini is cute too!

Side note: It’s so nice that you can bleach these. Make sure if yours is worn/raggedy to update your options. It’s not a great look otherwise, but you know that.
